Best Dressed

Being a designer, people ask my opinion about fashion a lot.  I'm happy to give it, though it's only an opinion and you know how the saying goes!  So, what did my taffetadarlings think of the Golden Globes last night?  There were a few disasters which I won't even touch on (why destroy the possibility of a potential future client, right?), but for the most part I thought that Hollywood did okay!

I'll start by awarding "best dressed" to my hostess for the evening, Wendy Brandes.  Wendy greeted me in a black tee shirt, black gym shorts and cozy slippers!  She's never looked better.  LOL... kidding.  It was that kind of evening -- the kind where it's best to stay indoors sipping Champagne, watching the hilarity that is Ricky Gervais in the comfort of your own home on the comfort of your own couch, safe from the wintry chill!!

Ricky should have busted out some of his dance moves last night

Okay, back to the show!  If I were to select a winner from last night's event, it would be Francisco Costa.  Who, some of you might ask?  Shame on you!  His name should be as familiar to you as Giorgio Armani or Marc Jacobs or... Calvin Klein... because he IS Calvin Klein.  Well, not literally, of course, but Mr. Costa has headed up the Calvin Klein Collection since 2003 when Mr. Klein retired.  Costa dressed my number one pick last night, Claire Danes as well as Emma Stone (who never looked better).

Olivia Wilde looked stunning, but that was sure a whole lotta dress!  Co-presenter, Robert Pattinson didn't know where to stand when the two were on stage together.  There was just no room for him and the poor chap had to strain his neck to reach the mic.  Under her Marchesa dress (could have been just about anything), Ms. Wilde wore the most fabulous Louboutin stilettos!

My pick for the boys is, well, a BOY.  Jesse Eisenberg looked simply adorable and perfectly put together in Dolce & Gabbana.  Generally, I think the men did well last night... Ryan Gosling in Ferragammo, James Franco (a.k.a. my boyfriend) in Gucci and Robert Downey Jr. broke the mold, as per usual, and wore a grey Prada suit.  Fantastic.  And Michael Douglas was wearing Canali, but who really cares.  He just looked GREAT and healthy.  His opening line about a "standing o" was brilliant!

One final comment... I do love Tilda Swinton and appreciate that she has her own sense of style.  I would be happy to dress her!  Tilda wore Haider Ackermann before anyone knew who the hell he was.  Last night (in Jil Sander), I thought she looked quite striking, but also bore quite a striking resemblance to David Bowie.  I mean, she was definitely channelling 70's Bowie!

Tilda Swinton and David Bowie... or is it David Bowie and Tilda Swinton?

The Oscars - The Bad, The Bad & The Ugly

OK, so I had to do an Oscar post after all. I watched the fashion police with Joan Rivers last night and I loved how bitchy and honest she was. I did have to disagree with her when she trashed my boy Robert Downey. I don’t care what he wears; he could roll out of bed -- or somebody else’s, (perhaps a stranger’s bed at a random house in Malibu) and still look gorgeous!

I’m not even going to do a best dressed list this time because, frankly, nobody was that inspiring or well dressed in my opinion. Of course, everybody has different opinions when it comes to red carpet dressing, but I wish the “fashion police” (besides Joan Rivers) would stop worrying about offending actresses and have the guts to say when something is horrible. I mean, JLo on the best dressed list? Come on! She is a gorgeous woman, but her dress was an absolute disaster. It looked like a second dress was growing out of the side. Jennifer was wearing Siamese twins.

Charlize Theron, please fire your stylist. Charlize is so beautiful, but I couldn’t get past her breasts! Usually, that would be a good thing, but not in this case. Why would she think that lumpy rosettes would enhance her figure?

I know I’ve mentioned before that I am not a girly girl, so I usually don’t go for ruffles, but I keep an open mind when I’m looking at other people’s choices. Everyone has different taste – I get it. However, Zoe Saldana and Vera Farmiga just didn’t do ruffles the right way. These two ensembles were hideous. Sorry girls.

I wish that James Cameron’s wife would just eat something already. I can’t even remember what she was wearing because I couldn’t actually look at her for more than 2 seconds! I thought she was part of the homage to horror films the Academy did.

Finally, did anybody else feel that the interpretive dance was sort of out of place? I’m glad they wasted so much time with it that poor Tom Hanks had to announce the best picture in 1.8 seconds. Way to honor Kathryn Bigelow guys, she only made history! Well, I guess the interpretive dance was more important.

This would have been more appropriate for the Oscars!

Elementary My Dear

Robert Downey in Sherlock Holmes
I’m going to see Sherlock Holmes tonight and besides the adorable Robert Downey Jr., I’m anxious to see the costumes. The film is nominated for a Costume Designers Guild Award for EXCELLENCE IN PERIOD FILM (designer, Jenny Beavan). The nominees for the 12th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards were announced on January 26 and the winners will be revealed on February 25 at the Beverly Hilton. Bruno (Jason Alper) is up for EXELLENCE IN CONTEMPORARY FILM, but I doubt it stands a chance against Coco Before Chanel (designer, Catherine Leterrier).  To find out more about the Costume Designers Guild and the nominees, check out this link from lookonline.
